Research Experience

Stanford University - Symbiotic Project on Affective Neuroscience
Research Assistant ( May 2004 - Present)

Working under Dr. Brian Knutson to perform cognitive neuroscience research with fMRI to determine active brain regions as a function of reward magnitude and time delay between cue and target presentation. Additionally, a behavioral study was conducted to determine the affect of participants during certain segments of the cognitive task.

  • Used AFNI software to prep and generate activation maps, conduct regression analysis, and determine voxels of interest to peform time course analysis.
  • Developed and modified cognitive tasks using E-Prime coding software.
  • Managed all participant logistics including scheduling, training, and debriefing on a examining valence and arousal affect.
  • Used excel spreadsheets and SPSS to analyze and present data generated from both behavioral neurocognitive studies.
  • Participated in analyzing and critiquing drafts submitted for publication.

University of Nebraska Medical Center - Center for the Neurovirology and Neurodegenerative Disorders.
Research Assistant (May 2002 - August 2003)

Under Dr. Howard Gendelman performed neuro-immunological research focused on developing a vaccine for Parkinson’s Disease. The specific task examined the relative concentrations of Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP) and Glial-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (GDNF) as function of experimental conditions in the striatum of mice injected with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine.

  • Performed cell lysing, Nissl staining, Western blotting, proliferation assays, Bicinchoninic Assay (BCA), and immunofluorescent staining.
  • Exposed to both MRI and A-SPECT research.
  • Developed a proposal adhering to grant protocol requirements.

University of Nebraska at Omaha
Principal Investigator (August 2002 - November 2003)

My thesis work conducted under Dr. Joseph Brown. A cognitive-behavioral experiment attempting to show the role of frustration in learning. Frustration was measured as a function of response rate and total amount of responses given while solving problems in a cognitive task.

  • Designed and coded a cognitive problem solving program using Visual Basic.
  • Created and refined the problem set used for the experiment.
  • Managed all participant logistics including scheduling, training, and debriefing.
  • Maintained and troubleshot the program across multiple windows platforms.

University of Nebraska at Omaha
Research Assistant (August 2000 - December 2000)

The research examined the effects of Fluoxetine on the immune system. I served as an independent observer measuring rat behavior during a swim test.

University of Nebraska at Omaha
Research Assistant (January 2000 -May 2000)

Performed research for a Neuropsychology laboratory course. The study used EEG to examine the congruity effect as a function of the N400 and P300 wave forms.
